How to lower your car insurance premium
Ten levers, ordered by how much they usually move the number. Free to try, no phone call required for most.
1. Re-shop every 12–24 months
Insurers price new business and renewals differently. A customer of eight years is frequently quoted more than a first-year customer for identical coverage with the same carrier. It is not personal; it is how the pricing models work.
2. Raise the deductible
This is the single most reliable lever. Going from a $500 to a $1,000 deductible typically removes a meaningful slice of premium. The trade-off is real: you must be able to cover the deductible if you claim.
3. Check whether you're over-covered
Full coverage on a car worth $4,000 can cost more over three years than the car is worth. Compare your annual collision+comprehensive premium against the vehicle's actual value.
4. Ask about every discount you qualify for
- Multi-policy / bundling
- Multi-vehicle
- Safe driver / telematics programme
- Good student (if applicable)
- Vehicle safety features
- Paid-in-full vs monthly
- Low annual mileage
5. Fix your credit-based insurance score if your state allows it
Most states permit insurers to use a credit-based insurance score. It is not your FICO, but it is derived from similar data and can weigh heavily. Disputing errors on your credit report can move your premium.
6. Never let coverage lapse
A lapse, even a short one, is treated as a serious risk marker. It typically follows you for years.
7. Pay in full rather than monthly
Installment fees are effectively interest. The saving is usually small but free.
8. Review after life changes
Moving, marriage, a new job that shortens your commute, paying off the car — all change your rating factors. Insurers do not always apply them downward automatically.
9. Consider usage-based insurance honestly
Telematics can genuinely cut premiums for low-mileage, smooth drivers. It can also raise them. Read what data is collected before enrolling.
10. Ask your current insurer to re-rate you first
Before switching, one call: "Can you re-rate my policy and confirm I'm receiving every discount I qualify for?" Costs nothing, occasionally solves it outright.
